Fairy Tales – Lessons for Life and Small Business

When I was a kid, I loved stories.  Actually, it hasn’t changed much now that I am adult.  I love a good story, told well, with just enough detail, and a reason to be told. Great stories aren’t just about something that happened.   Great stories, come with a lesson.  I think that is why I love fairy tales; simple stories (with a message and a happy ending) and and great myths (simple stories, with tragic endings and a warning in the lesson.) As a small business owner, I find lots of good advice in stories: Cinderella  – Magic opens doors, but it is your charm which...

Start Up Fuel

In the last few months I have seen a number of people write about the amount of innovation we can expect to come out of the current economic recession.  Many people talk about necessity being the mother of invention  and the shift from larger to small, and as I  started reading about Y Combinator that I got a real glimpse of this incredible innovation in action. And finally, she wrestled with whether or not to put pricing in the brochure.  The cost of reprinting is prohibitive, but she didn’t...

Not All Web Metrics Are Meaningful

Almost 18 months ago we started an experiment to drive our Alexa ranking down.  Beginning at 7.7 million we were thrilled to see that with just a little attention we could drop to 2.9 million in just six weeks.   Our goal was to be under a million by June 1. Why did we care?  An Alexa ranking is a comparative assessment of your website to all websites worldwide.  Google is # 1, Facebook #2.  .. So the lower the number, the more traffic, search rankings, cross references, etc. And since we wanted to improve our standing, we kept working at it.  Well it took awhile, and we hit 900,000...
