Small Business HR

I had a chance to catch up with Ann Fisher of HR Alternative Consulting, Inc and talk about some of the challenges small business owners face with regard to HR compliance. She believes PEOPLE are your most valuable asset. And she provides resources to increase productivity, retention and avoid costly legal issues. One of the issues we talked about at length were the rules surrounding exempt and non exempt status for employees.  Many employers make the mistake of  paying employees on a salary to avoid paying overtime. The problem, is if the employees don’t qualify, the owner may be...

Hurry Up And Wait

When I was in high school, I spent three years working at a telemarketing agency. It was exactly as horrible as it sounds. However, every situation has its benefits. A Whole New Website

Today’s post is by our intern Stephanie Boyden who has been working closely with Jay to develop a number of client websites. This past semester I took a class called “Creativity and Communication.” On the first day my professor stressed to us that everyone has the ability to be creative, but living in a world that caters to left-brainers, often we lose sight of that ability. She introduced us to a book called A Whole New Mind, which I haven’t been able to stop thinking about since putting it down. The author Daniel Pink emphasized that in an increasingly automated world of...
