Talking about Social Media
This week, I will be in Seattle on Tuesday and Columbus, Ohio on Friday talking with business owners and recruiting professionals about social media. While the general themes will be the same, there will be some distinct differences in my presentations. In Seattle, I will be talking with HVAC contractors. For this group, I am going to focus on Facebook as a means of driving traffic to their primary website. Strategies for them include short videos of technicians introducing themselves, and interviews with customers. For the contractors who focus on remodeling, I am going to also encourage...

Social media’s greatest power is in connecting you with people you may never have met otherwise. Just look at my good friend Randy Clark and me. We work on opposite sides of town, him as an in-house marketing guy at TKOGraphix, me as an agency chick. He’s into playing classic rock and roll, I’m into curling up with a good book. He’s an inveterate extrovert while I’m a curmudgeonly introvert. There’s also a smidgen of age difference. There’s no reason we ever would have met, let alone become friends, except for social media. I met Tony Scelzo at a Rainmaker’s event. The conversation was lively and fast paced, with the appropriate amount of trying to impress each other. We exchanged business cards and went on our way. But that conversation was the beginning of a relationship which would change the course of my business. A few days later, Tony called and asked me to be a part of Rainmakers Advisory Board. If you have ever had a conversation with Tony, you know there is lots of energy and when you walk away you realize you agreed to something. Often, you are not sure what it was you agreed to....

Most of time, if I am asked to make a presentation to a group, the audience is comprised of small business owners. So the invitation to talk to the business development team of Duke Energy about Linkedin was a challenging. but fun change of pace for Allison and me. While we focused a significant amount of time on the set up of their profiles, the liveliest part of the program came as we talked about how to find contacts in specific companies. Even with small contact circles they were surprised to see how wide their networks spread as they added just a few contacts each. It was fun to...

Many companies talk about the benefits of social media, but few are making significant investments in social media programs. More than 60% of the companies in our survey indicated social media represents between 0 – 5% of their total marketing budget. This is fairly consistent regardless of company size. Most of the companies we surveyed indicated they use social media to promote their business, but few seem to have a specific or consistent approach to the process. Just like any other marketing endeavor, without a clear strategy which is focused on achieving specific goals, the activities...
