Two Years of Madness

I didn’t want to come to my interview at Roundpeg. I wanted to go to the zoo. It was late January, 2010. I had been un- or underemployed for the eight months since my college graduation. I’d worked retail, I’d done some contract writing work for a local university and most recently, I’d been laid off from a part-time job that I hated but wished would go full-time because it paid well and I wanted a job–any job. I was down-in-the-dumps on that January day when Roundpeg called and told me they didn’t have any jobs available, but they’d talk to me about...

Faces of Roundpeg: The Interns

I had tossed around the idea of quitting and taking an internship but the thought was terrifying.  Could I afford it, was it really a smart idea, was it necessary? Every possible question flashed through my mind a million times.  I had a lot to...

Why I’m Mean to Interns

I’ve supervised four interns here at Roundpeg. I’ve made at least three of them cry. Two of them hate my guts. Two of them are respected professionals who I genuinely consider both friends and colleagues. Why is there this dichotomy? Why do half of my former interns despise me–and why am I okay with it? Simple: I care enough about my interns to push them to the very limit of their abilities and then some.
